Well, I am in San Francisco every day, and even I can't get into GDC. Sad panda is sad.

But I'll let you people know if Nyar'tholep materializes over The City By The Bay.

I have to say that I'm a more or less with Kendrick on this one; one may respond to that point of view in saying that "They didn't technically tell us they'd reveal anything.", but Funcom isn't stupid. They know, and knew, what message they were sending out with those tweets, with those interviews, with those big reveals.

Even if it was just a matter of the dev's personal failure to clarify their personal tweets, it could still have been remedied; an official announcement could have been made, or corporate could have told the developers to be careful about what they say.

Even if indirectly, FunCom knew that, psychologically, they were hyping, and we were led to believe that there would be something.

That being said I'm not willing to get my panties up in a bunch yet. There's still an entire week left of GDC, and plenty of time following for information to be released. Even I will admit I would find it to be in bad taste to show us everything before even all of the press saw it. A clever marketing decision would be to give the press a little time to report up, tell us "This is friggin' awesome!", then let Funcom give us a taste in the days, perhaps weeks, following. Press release and slow information trickle gives the public time to form a biased decision that it is, indeed, friggin' awesome. Or, at least, that's what I would imagine.

I feel quite bad for Ragnar having to take the brunt of the blame from the community in large part; I get the feeling that he really wants to show us something, but is operating under the thumb of a dis-attached marketing director somewhere.

One last thing: I am pretty pissed about the Illuminati trailer, I'll have to shamefully admit; I didn't expect much, but I pretty much had my heart set that this would be the last possible window of oppurtunity they could have to release it. I suppose with the sudden rise in popularity for the Illuminati faction after our super kickass video, in the eyes of the general gaming public, that still is a huge marketing ace for them, but even still, the wait stops getting cute after a while.

I admit I mostly agree with you on this one (not quite so much on being pissed though). I'm not sure I understand why it would not be released at this point. I figured it was pretty much to be expected so to hear that is not is more than a little disappointing.

I wouldn't count on it.

RT's tweet today is a pretty good indicator they're flying by the seat of their pants. Or the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Or both.

people is giving too much importance to this, and forgeting thet "embargo" is not a new word on this area of the internet.

Of all people, you should have known...

It's not the fact that there IS an embargo, Ith.
It's the fact that it was announced at the proverbial 23rd hour.

Two months of 'Can't wait to show you GDC!', 'GDC is going to be awesome!', 'Video for GDC done!', theeeeeen 'Oh, btw. Embargo'd. No known date that the embargo will pulled', and 'But don't worry! We're going to be tweeting all the cool things we're doing that we're not going to tell you about!'.

Any word of when they are going to be presenting at GDC? Do we have an inside man?

Honestly i thought that was gonna be the case, all the time, cause that's how it has been, and cause GDC FC presentations are not public ones, not for TSW (haven't checked AoC)

And you, yourself, among others, me included, hinted that this was likely gonna be the case, that's why i don't really get why it seems to have caught you, particularily, by surprise.

Last time we had an ARG prior to the convention, which created a lot of expectatives, and then were told that there would be an embargo. They showed off some goodies, but not the big things to us during the convention.

Relax, it's gonna be like a week, just like it has been on all the non public shows, and we might see some goodies in the mean time.

Just like it has been before.

They are gonna be doing several press only presentations (like they have in the past) none of them is public, we will get the information at a later date, when the embargo is lifted and all the press is cleared to publish the info at once.

Impressions of TSW at GDC, Day 1

Just got back to the hotel and trying to compose my thoughts of the day

Couple things that stand out:

1) As I tweeted, Funcom will officially not be revealing the 3rd CGI trailer at GDC. My impression after talking with the team today is that it's because it just wasn't necessary given all the in-game footage they'll be revealing to the press. At a cost of several hundred thousand dollars a pop, those CGI's are "Aces" they only want to use at very specific points (again, my impression)

2) I learned that the Press will not be allowed to film the gameplay footage or record any sound during certain portions of the presentation. My current assumption is that the press will also not be provided the presented footage. From what I've heard, it seems likely that they will be provided an asset package similar to what was provided at PAX. This likely means still ingame images and concept art. (again, only my impression at this point)

3) Since it seems the actual gameplay footage will not be released to the public at this time, it sounds like it should be released in some form (read: not like this, but more like a "marketing trailer") sometime in the not-to-distant-future.

4) If I recall correctly, the presentation consists of 4 or 5 parts. I think I remember seeing sections for Story, Gameplay (with lots of ingame footage, including combat), and more detailed look at Kingsmouth and it's characters.

5) TSW presentations begin tomorrow at 10 AM. They have appointments scheduled every 45 minutes, and I think the last one ends around 6 PM. They will be doing presentations tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday.

I know there's some people watching GDC that don't want to hear "OMG IT'S SO AWESOME", but guys let me tell you...

What little I've seen so far (about 3-4 minute)... The sound, the music, the voice acting, the environments, the colors, characters, textures, lighting, etc etc... It's unreal. It completely blew away any expectations or assumptions I had.

I should be able to see the full presentation tomorrow. After I've "officially" seen it I probably won't be able to say much more.

I know the wait for something tangible is incredible frustrating - and trust me, I am letting the team know how frustrated we are - when they finally get all the ducks in a row and are ready to show this to the world... well... I think that we will be very proud to say on that day that we were a part of this when all we had to go on was a tiny sliver of information and a whole lot of faith.

I think I speak for all of us in saying a big thanks for keeping us informed and being a view for the community, Nyte.

Also, man... I want to badger you with questions but I won't since I bet you are bound by the embargo type deal as well.

Well, Nyte, don't worry about me (Idk what the others will think). Though the journey is full of experiences, the end is sometimes the most important thing. Translation: Though we are frustrated about the wait and embargoes and stuff, the video clips and the eventual launch of the game will be worth the wait.

First, and once more, thanks to Nyte for all the info you've already provided.

IMHO, I think that anything that you can provide us with, is better than nothing, seeing as GDC is GDC. It's an event focused on the industry and the press, and not on the public, and as we are not all game developers/artists/etc etc, we will have to settle for whatever bits and pieces of information we will get.

Have fun Nyte, say kudos to the team for us!

Well sounds good Nyte, I can't say I'm impressed by this whole debacle, of course we knew there'd be an embargo but they could have put it out there earlier and said when the embargo would drop.

Also, if we don't see the in game stuff it'll be a downright joke since they've tweeted us about revealing game footage etc (AT GDC aswell not just soon)

Too bad they don't do public shows, I'd have seriously considered GDC (I love how students can get access to these sorts of shows) if they did, besides it's just an awesome event.

Oh well here's to the 20th which is probably when the embargo will drop.
